A cheap cooking oil that can be found at a local grocery store near you is the reason for primate genocide and an ecological disaster. The oil is palm oil, and it is cheap and is a common ingredient in household products and in foods.
Vast unspoiled areas of rainforest are being bulldozed every day to make room for palm oil plantations in Malaysia, Indonesia, Sumatra, and Borneo. The scale of the deforestation and its speed is staggering.
The workers are being instructed to get rid of any wildlife they encounter and how they do it is unimportant. They are using their trucks to run over orangutans. In the last 20 years, 90% of the orangutan habitat has been destroyed to make way for palm oil plantations.
If this deforestation is allowed to continue, orangutans will face extinction in the wild this year. Within twenty years, the jungles they call home will be completely gone. Are you upset yet?
There is still something we can do about this. All we have to do is stop buying products that have palm oil in them. Some of the items include anti-dandruff shampoo and breadsticks. Check the labels before you buy anything. Be aware that big ‘discount’ supermarkets will cut corners.
Palm oil isn’t even that healthy for you – it is bad for your heart! Watch the video below. Write to companies and stores that sell products made with palm oil – and share this with everyone you know.
